It’s raining heavily today, so I thought I’d take a bus from Port de Pollença to Palma. As it is Sunday, they are quite infrequent – about every two hours, generally speaking. Yesterday’s walk really knackered up the condition of my one and only facemask. As the bus journey takes around 90 minutes each way, I bought a new one just in case. Whilst it’s much faster to drive, I wanted to give myself the ability to enjoy a couple of beers.
Palma de Mallorca
Despite this being my third holiday to Mallorca, I’ve spent little time in the city. My one and only visit was on Thursday (day 6), when I made a fleeting visit to purchase new cycling shoes! I was in a bit of a rush back then, but clocked a few places I wanted to visit. Unfortunately, none of these places are open on Sundays. To make matters worse, some places that were normally open weren’t because tomorrow is a bank holiday. This restriction meant that I could only visit public outdoors tourist attractions, which was quite disappointing.
The city centre is filled with many cobbled streets going in seemingly all directions. As well as this, there’s many alleyways and cubbyholes. It feels quite small and compact when compared to the capital cities of the UK. Today was eerily quiet – presumably because nothing is open, but possibly also because of the pandemic. The one and only open coffee shop definitely had the lion’s share of business today.
Catedral-Basílica de Santa María de Mallorca
The Catedral-Basílica and the surrounding gardens are most definitely the highlight of the city. Like everything else today, it was closed. Even so I was able to walk around the walls and lake, and look out to sea.
I will admit that the picture of the Catedral itself was taken on Thursday, when there were bright blue skies!
Craft beer scarcity
Sadly, my grand afternoon plan of getting pretty drunk in pubs before catching the bus home failed. The pubs on my short list (Lórien, Del Mon Beer Shop, Guirigall and Adalt Brewing) were all closed today. It was likely I could have found a venue serving Amstel, but I could do that every day (and had been) in Port de Pollença. I’m here for another thirteen days, so feel this like this is to be continued.
