Outside of Sa Calobra, the route from Port de Pollenca to ‘the lighthouse’ (Cap de Formentor) and back is one of the most popular routes for road cyclists on the whole of Mallorca – and for good reason. Not only are the climbs a good introduction to what lies ahead on future rides; the descents are most enjoyable too.
The route itself is a good first ride to tackle as you prepare for the days ahead. Following your flight, it is easy to set up your bike sub-optimally during re-assembly. The destination is not too far away should changes need to be made – be that roadside or once you return.
The views from the coasts out to sea are stunning, and the route is one of the highlights of any Majorca trip. You should note that there is a tunnel (second image) – through which, bike lights are mandatory. Be very careful – it can take your eyes a couple of seconds to adjust between very bright sunlight and a very dark tunnel. I recommend staying as close as you can to the centre of the road if possible.
In the event that you need to refuel, there is a cafe at Cap de Formentor itself. As it’s the only option, it is expensive.
Colls
The return route comprises of just one named coll which you tackle in both directions: Coll de la Creueta (207m).
It’s not too steep in either direction but it can get quite windy on some of the switchbacks. Take care that this doesn’t catch you out when descending!
Hopefully I get better at taking selfies as the days progress.
Disaster averted by Pro Cycle Hire
As soon as I unpacked my bicycle I noticed that Airport Security had opened up my bike box at some point, as some electrical tape had been tampered with. To make matters worse, it soon became evident that a quick release axle for my front wheel was missing. After what seemed like a mad scramble around the Port to assess my options, Bruce and Lisa from Pro Cycle Hire Mallorca essentially saved my trip by offering to lend me one for the duration of my stay (free of charge) for which I am forever grateful. Thank you so much!
As well as being a cycle hire shop, the premises also has a workshop, cafe and bar with a good choice of cold draught beers on tap. It’s the perfect place to visit following a ride if you want to relax in the sunshine and celebrate the days achievements.
Mr Doo has a very detailed blog post on Pro Cycle Hire if you’d like to find out more.
Café Vitho
Café Vitho in Port de Pollença is another place that comes recommended. They serve good coffee and cake during the day if you need to replenish your energy stores. In an evening, the owners serve tasty pizza and pasta. Inside, the cafe is filled with cycling memorabilia including jerseys, caps and even tables signed by professional cyclists. The owner is a passionate cyclist himself and is more than happy to walk you through his collection!
